Facebook stated this week that they were recently hacked, though no user data was compromised according to the Associated Press.

The company reported the "sophisticated attack" in a blog post stating that it took place sometime in January when a "small number of employees" visited a compromised website that installed malware on their machines.

"As soon as we discovered the presence of the malware, we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement and began a significant investigation that continues to this day," Facebook Security said in the blog post.

The largest social networking site in the world is just the latest high-profile website to be hacked into this year. Twitter was hacked into in early February and The New York Times, and Washington Post websites have also admitted to being hacked within the last calendar year according to CNN.

The sites attributed the breaches to hackers who work for the Chinese government according to CNN, but Facebook did not mention that in their blog post about the incident.

"As part of our ongoing investigation, we are working continuously and closely with our own internal engineering teams, with security teams at other companies, and with law enforcement authorities to learn everything we can about the attack, and how to prevent similar incidents in the future," Facebook wrote in their blog post about the hack.

The company found no evidence that any user information was compromised according to the Associated Press. Twitter however reported that user names, encrypted passwords and email addresses for and email addresses for over 250,000 users were hacked. For every hacked account, Twitter forced the accounts to change their passwords to prevent any more damage.
