Apple is reportedly moving into producing content for a series of original videos. This move is in line with plans to directly compete with major players Netflix and Amazon in the long run.
Tech giant to enter the business of original TV series production. The US tech giant announced on Monday that it will be introducing two video series in the style of TV shows. The shows will be released via Apple Music, the company's subscription-based music streaming service. Other shows such as scripted dramas are being planned at the moment.
"There are a bunch of projects. We're in it. This is what Apple Music is going to be. Apple Music will have video and other things that I can't talk about. We're going to be aggressive about it," said Jimmy Iovine, the head of the subscription-based service for US$10 a month, during an interview last Monday night.
The company has stated that it currently doesn't have any plans to compete with giants the likes of Netflix or Amazon even it has more than enough capital and resources to do so. In addition, the company is still primarily considered a technology company. It does plan to use original video to eventually distinguish the music-streaming service in the future.
The service was launched back in June of 2015 and has grown to more than 20 million subscribers. It competes with other music-streaming services such as those offered by Spotify.
Netflix and Amazon have recently increased the commission of high-quality original shows to attract new subscribers and to help retain current ones. Unlike the two, the company doesn't intend to purchase shows.
Eddy Cue, vice president of software and services has stated that the main focus of this move is "to do things that are unique and cultural". It is expected that the service will be much like MTV which went beyond airing just music videos and music-related shows.
