Just hours after Nissan unveiled their new Resonance model at the North American International Auto Show, the vehicle was selected as the winner of the EyesOn Design Award for Best Concept Vehicle.

Nissan announced the news in a press release issued this week.

The EyesOn Design Awards honor the best production and concept cars that are making their NAIAS debut according to the press release. This is the seventh year they've handed out awards to companies from all over the world to recognize "skill and creativity."

"The Resonance redefines the crossover segment yet again," said Andy Palmer, Nissan vice president of global product planning.

Winners are selected by a panel of either active or retired design heads of automotive companies, designers from other fields, or transportation design chairs from various art schools.

The Resonance, which looks much like the Murano, the company's current midsize SUV, has been hailed as the future of midsize SUV vehicles. Nissan stated at the NAIAS that designers were influenced by the "future allure of hypersonic travel" when creating the vehicle.

"This design is not meant to appeal to traditional two-box SUV shoppers, but rather to those whose fashion and design choices make a statement. For Nissan, this concept makes our statement about the future of this segment," said Francois Bancon, Nissan's GM of product strategy and planning according to Autonet.ca.

The vehicle features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine matted down with a hybrid electric drive system and Nissan's next-generation Xtronic automatic transmission. The all-wheel drive concept also will come equipped with Nissan's "one-motor, two-clutch" system, a lithium-ion battery and advanced management system according to the company press release.

Nissan's new design was created under the direction of Shinro Nakamura, a senior vice president and chief creative officer of Nissan Motors.
