Sixty years ago this week, Chevrolet displayed the first ever Corvette to a stunned audience at the Motorama auto show in New York City. The company decided to celebrate the historic anniversary by returning to New York to showcase the brand-new 2014 Corvette Stingray.

GM announced the news of the Corvette Stingray at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this week.

"The all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray is the most advanced and engaging Corvette in the long, prestigious legacy of this uniquely American success story," said Chris Perry vice president of Chevrolet Marketing in a company press release. "It is a car woven into the fabric of American culture and it got its start right here in the Big Apple."

GM introduced the original Corvette at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Jan. 1953. Over 1.4 million people came to see the new Corvette according to GM. Since then almost 2 million vehicles have been sold, which has accounted for almost one-third of all sports car sales in the U.S. according to GM.

GM stated at the Detroit Auto Show that the new Stingray will "remain true to its roots" and still feature many different aspects from previous models. The two-seat sports car will come equipped with an all-new 6.2L LT1 V-8 engine, will be able to achieve 450 horsepower, and can go 0 to 60 in less than four seconds.

"Stingray is one of the hallowed names in automotive history," said Ed Welburn, GM vice president of global design in a company press release. "We knew we couldn't use the Stingray name unless the new car truly lived up to the legacy. The result is a new Corvette Stingray that breaks from tradition, while remaining instantly recognizable as a Corvette the world over."

The new Corvette goes on sale in the third quarter of 2013.
