The decline in gas prices won't last however, as prices are expected to rise again due to "crude oil prices" and supply shortages caused by refinery issues and pipeline problems. This issues help attribute to the gas price increase on a yearly basis.

"Higher crude oil prices are translating into higher wholesale gasoline prices," and retailers will need to pass them through, she says. Expect prices to jump 5 or 10 cents per gallon soon.

Gas is up 2 cents higher on average at most gas stations around the country according to the survey.

Most cities with the lowest gas prices can be found in the Midwest according to CNN and certain locations in the South. The city with the lowest average is Tucson, Arizona where gas is only $2.90.

Long Island, New York holds the honor for the highest gas prices, charging drivers $3.75 on average for gas.

Other cities with the lowest gas prices include:

Boston - $3.51

Atlanta - $3.19

Miami - $3.33

Chicago - $3.45

St. Louis - $2.97

Minneapolis - $3.17

Houston - $3.03

Denver - $3.06

Seattle - $3.35

San Diego - $3.56

AAA reports that around 93.3 million people will travel at least 50 miles during the holiday season this year, the most since 2006. The drop in gas price should make most motorists happy then, since the average driver has paid approximately $2,700 for 744 gallons of gas in 2012 according to KTVU.com.

Reports have estimated that U.S. citizens will use around 8.73 million barrels of gas per days this year. If that number holds up it would be the lowest level since 2001.
