A new breed of BMW's 5-Series will be unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Auto Show. Aptly named "Touring," the German automaker has recently released official data and images of what the new wagon will be packing.
The BMW 5-Series Touring looks is not that much different compared with its sedan counterpart, except for the massive bump intended for cargo space at the back, although this has a long roof that was specifically designed for the European market. Basically, the new wagon is still equipped with the same basic features as LED headlights that bleed into the grille, remote control parking, and active grille shutters.

Four engines will be available at launch in the UK, 2 of them having xDrie AWD. BMW 5-Series Touring 540i xDrive is the most powerful with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine capable of delivering 340 horses and 332 lb-ft of torque. The German automaker claims its 0-60mps is around 5.1 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Touring 530d is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline-6 diesel engine with 265 hp. The Touring 530i has a 2.0-liter inline-4 gas engine good producing 252 horses, whereas the Touring 520d has a 2.0-liter inline-4 diesel engine producing a 190 horsepower.
Except for the BMW 5-Series Touring 520d, all models will have a standard eight-speed automatic transmission. The 520d comes with a six-speed manual, instead.
Basically, in most angles, the new 5-Series Touring is a BMW wagon. It has a slightly longer wheelbase matched with a rear hatch with a massive cargo space. Its carrying capacity is 1,600 pounds, and when the rear seats are folded, the cargo space expands to around 60 cubic feet, from the 20 cubic feet when the rear seats are up, reports MotorAuthority. Also, the new wagon has a button in the trunk to control the rear seats.
Fuel economy for the BMW 5-Series Touring has been increased to 11% thanks to its lower weight and more efficient powertrains matched with a more aerodynamic design. This model is around 220 lb lighter compared with its predecessor.
To keep up with the latest in car technology, the BMW 5-Series Touring has also been equipped with the same new iDrive touchscreen infotainment system with a 10.25-inch screen on the dashboard. The new BMW wagon also has an On-street Parking Information, aiding in search of available parking spots.
BMW has specifically stated that this new wagon was made for the European market. Thus, the United States will instead receive a sleeker successor to the Gran Turismo.
The BMW 5-Series Touring will debut at the Geneva Auto Show, kicking off in March 7. According to CarMagazine UK, it is already available for pre-order, with prices starting at £38,385 or $48,562.97. First batch of deliveries will begin by June 2017.
