Ford Fusion Recall: Engineers Have A Plan To Fix 1.6-liter Engines That May Cause Fires

Dec 11, 2012 11:01 AM EST | Matt Mercuro

Ford addressed their corrective action plan this week for how they are planning to fix over Ford Fusion and Escape vehicles with 1.6-liter engines that could cause fires due to engines overheating.

The company issued a press release this week to discuss the matter. Click here to view it on the Ford website.

To fix the problem, Ford is constructing software updates to a cooling system of the 1.6-liter engines found in SEL and SE Ford Escape and Fusion models that were recalled on Nov. 30 according to the press release. The updates will reportedly "better manage engine temperatures" which the original cooling system was not designed to address.

"We remain absolutely committed to continuously improving and providing the highest-quality vehicles to our customers. When a potential issue is identified, we act promptly on behalf of our customers, as we did this time," said Raj Nair, Ford Group Vice President, Global Product Development in the press release.

Ford stated that they will start notifying customers this month so that they can bring their vehicles to the closest dealership to have the problem fixed. The repair should only take Ford specialists around a day to complete, however the company does warn those affected by the recall that due to service scheduling requirements, dealerships may need the vehicle for a little longer.

The company advised those who own Ford Fusions and Escapes with 1.6-liter engines to not use their vehicles until the maintenance work is completed and urged them to find alternative transportation that would be paid by their dealer free of charge.

Ford Escape vehicles with 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter engines and Fusion models with 2.5-liter engines were not affected by the November recall according to the press release.

No one has been seriously injured or killed by the issue, but a number of people have reported overheating issues occurring in their vehicles to Ford, many of which started a small fire.

Ford advises anyone who does use their vehicle until it is fixed and runs into a problem, to pull over immediately, turn the engine off, exit the vehicle and call to have the vehicle towed away.
