Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent was released on $500,000 bail Sunday after being charged with intoxication manslaughter according to a report by Reuters. Brent was arrested Saturday after being involved in a fatal crash in Dallas, TX that killed his teammate and best friend Jerry Brown Jr.
Brent showed up to a hearing on Sunday, just hours before the Cowboys played the Cincinnati Bengals, where he was ordered to pay a $500,000 bail bond or remain in prison located in Irving, Texas. Brent is being accused of driving well over the speed limit while being intoxicated.
Brown, who was in the passenger seat of the vehicle, was pronounced dead after arriving at a hospital near Dallas.
"I am devastated and filled with grief," Brent said in a statement according to Reuters. "Filled with grief for the loss of my close friend and team mate, Jerry Brown. I am also grief-stricken for his family, friends and all who were blessed enough to have known him. I will live with this horrific and tragic loss every day for the rest of my life. My prayers are with his family, our teammates and his friends at this time."
Brown was a linebacker on the Cowboys practice squad according to the Cowboys website, but had not appeared in any games with the team. He only played one game in the NFL for the Indianapolis Colts earlier this season before being signed by the Cowboys under the recommendation by Brent.
Brent had started the previous five games this season for the Cowboys before Sunday and had played 12 games overall since starting defensive lineman Jay Ratliff was injured earlier this year. He reportedly only suffered minor scrapes in the crash.
Intoxication manslaughter is a second degree felony in Texas, with a punishment of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $10,000 according to Reuters. This is Brent's second DUI arrest after he was arrested in 2009 when he was still a student at the University of Illinois.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said to the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network that the best way to honor Brown's memory was for the team to go out and play well. They proceeded to beat the Bengals by a score of 20-19 thanks to a late field goal by kicker Dan Bailey.
"Jerry was so focused and so bright," Jones said in a press statement. "Our hearts are certainly with his mother and family. We are all so sympathetic to what their family is going through."
The crash comes just a week after Kansas City Chiefs stating linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend at their home before driving to the Chiefs practice facility where he shot and killed himself in front of head coach Romeo Crennel and GM Scott Pioli.
