Ford Fusion Recalled For Second Time In Under A Month, Drivers Now Dealing With Headlamp Issues

Dec 07, 2012 04:12 PM EST | Matt Mercuro

Ford will be recalling 19,000 2013 Fusion models this week due to a headlight issue according to the company's website. This is the second Fusion recall in less than three weeks.

Models affected in the most recent recall are 2013 Fusion vehicles released on Feb. 3 through Oct. 20 according to report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Close to 1,100 vehicles are effected in Canada as well.

Last week the company was forced to recall 80,000 Fusions and Escape models due to issues that could cause the engine to catch fire. The recall effected vehicles that have 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engines.

The problem this time is that the company may not have a "properly cured coating" on the low-beam headlamp projector according to Ford. The issue could decrease driver visibility and increase the risk of a vehicle crash, according to the NHTSA report.

Someone first reported the problem to Ford in Oct. but as of last month no one had been seriously injured due to the issues.

Both recalls come just a week after the new Fusion was named the "Green Car of the Year" by Green Car Journal at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The vehicle was also named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently as well.

"Our electrified vehicles are a great symbol of how Ford is delivering leading fuel economy across our lineup - something that's driving more and more customers to switch to us from Toyota and others," says C.J. O'Donnell, marketing manager for Ford Electrified Vehicles in the press release.

Ford will start notifying customers who own 2013 Fusion vehicles on Dec. 10. Dealers will be instructed to replace all headlamps that may cause a problem free of charge.

If you aren't sure if your car applies to the most recent recall, feel free to call Ford at 1-866-436-7332 or visit the Ford website for more details.
