The annual "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" is scheduled to air Wednesday night on NBC with headlining acts such as Trace Adkins, CeeLo Green and Mariah Carey scheduled to perform. The Radio City Rockettes will also be performing at the event as well as The Muppets.

The night will be headlined however by the lighting of the 80-foot Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. The Norway Spruce tree will be decorated with over 30,000 lights according to The Daily Record and a Swarovski crystal star at the top of the tree.

This year's tree, which is over 50 feet wide and weighs 10 tons according to The Daily Record was donated by Joe Balku of Mount Olive, New Jersey. Balku was one of the many victims who lost power and a great deal of trees during superstorm Sandy this past October and decided to donate one of the remaining trees he had left.

When Balku purchased the house in 1973, the tree was "only" 22 feet tall and almost 40 years later the tree has grown 60 feet.

The tradition of the Rockefeller Christmas tree started back in 1933 when the first tree had 700 lights and was placed in front of the RCA Building which is now the GE Building. The famous Rockefeller Plaza outdoor ice-skating pond was opened three years later in 1936 according to the NBC site.

The tree is a big attraction for people to visit New York as visitors come throughout December from all over the world just to see it. The ceremony will take place from 7 until 9 p.m. tonight and is bound to cause traffic, road closures and rerouted public transportation.

Other performers include Victoria Justice, Chris Mann and Billy Crystal, Bette Milder are also scheduled to appear.

After Wednesday, the tree will be lit Nov. 29 through Jan. 7, 2013 at 5:30 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. The tree is located in Rockefeller Plaza, between West 48th and West 51st Streets and 5th and 6th Avenues in Manhattan.
