iPhone 5 Doubles Apple’s Smartphone Sales, Helps iOS Platform Pass Google’s Android System, Firmly Ahead Of Samsung Galaxy S3 In Sales

In the past 12 weeks, Apple's iOS mobile system has bumped up 48 percent in sales in the U.S. thanks to the introduction of the iPhone 5. The phone helped its operating system move a head of its Android competitor which is at 46.7 percent according to a study conducted by Kantar Worldpanel.

The study also shows that around 62 percent of iPhone 5 users have previously purchased an iPhone before in the past and have simply upgraded to the latest device after it was released earlier this season. Around 14 percent of iPhone 5 users are making the switch from Android to the newest Apple device, and six percent had previously used a BlackBerry device.

"The last time we saw iOS overtake Android in the U.S. was when the iPhone 4S was released and Apple managed to retain its lead for three consecutive periods," Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said in the statement. "This time we predict that Apple will beat its previous high of 49.3 percent and achieve its highest ever share of the U.S. smartphone market within the next two periods."

Sunnebo stated that the new 4-inch screen for the iPhone 5 has played a big roll on people going with the Apple phone instead of the Samsung which many feel is too big for a phone. The Galaxy S3 is almost an inch bigger and the Note 2 is 5.5 inches.

Apple has to be happy with the overall sales numbers so far, and also with that fact that a large number of users have already said that by the time the next device comes out, they plan on purchasing one. The company is expected to release either the iPhone 5S or 6 for their next phone.

"Apple has always managed to maintain loyalty levels far above the competition, and this has clearly played a part in driving sales of its new device," Sunnebo said in the article. "An impressive 92 percent of existing Apple owners in the US said they will choose an iPhone the next time they upgrade."

Android continues to win the battle in Europe however, as the Google phones make approximately 73.9 percent of all sales in places like Germany and 82 percent in Spain according to PC Magazine. Around 32 percent of phones sold in the UK were Apple phones.
