U.S. Safety Officials To Investigate Steering, Brake Problems In Hyundai, Honda SUVs

United States safety officials announced that they will be investigating reported steering and brake issues occurring in Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs and Honda Pilot SUVs.

According to a document released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a fastener can come loose in Santa Fe's which could cause the steering shaft to come part. If this happens, the driver of the vehicle would completely lose control over the car.

The steering defect investigation involves over 70,000 2011 Santa Fes. If safety officials rule that the problem is a significant one, Honda will have no choice but to recall the whole series.

No injuries or crashes have been reported due to the issue so far, but one driver reported a complaint to Honda about completely losing control over his steering wheel according to ABC.

The brake investigation will include over 88,000 Honda Pilots released since 2005 and will determine if the company will have to recall the entire series as well.

The reported problem with the car is that it can occasionally brake by itself without the driver stepping on the brake pedal or wanting to break according to a document released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Friday.

The defect has yet to cause a crash or any injuries, but safety officials are worried that it could eventually and would rather deal with the issue before something happens then after it's too late.

There currently isn't a solution to the problem, as the company is using a computer-controlled system to test out the breaking functions. Tests make the car stop as fast as possible in the case of emergency situations according to NPR.

In total Honda has received 205 complaints from customers who have experienced the problem in their car. Some owners have been too scared to use the car due to the issues happening more than once because they could get seriously hurt while driving even if they drive as safe as they possibly can.

The Pilot is one of Honda's best sellers and is especially popular amongst families due to its longevity and the comfort space the vehicle offers.
