Chevrolet: OnStar Developing EcoHub App For Volt Owners

Oct 05, 2012 04:25 PM EDT | Matt Mercuro

Chevrolet announced today that OnStar is producing an app that would be capable of telling Chevy Volt owners how much it costs to charge up their cars.

The app would be called EcoHub and would compare the Volt's energy usage to the total energy consumed in the owner's house by year, month or day.

The app works by taking the overall home energy usage information provided by any data source. It would then collect Volt charging information from OnStar users and owners of the specifically car who chose to receive the EcoHub app when either signing up or purchasing the car.

On average, The Volt can travel 38 miles on one full electric charge. Once the vehicle reaches that point, the car's onboard gas-powered electric generator will turn on automatically.

The revolutionary app will be tested immensely first to make sure it will work as precise as possible and the way that it should for Volt owners.

"For the first time we're able to put one of our Smart Grid solutions into the hands of actual consumers, thanks in part to our partnership with Pecan Street," said Paul Pebbles, global manager, Electric Vehicle and Smart Grid Services in a press release. "Down the line, we hope this app can be a beneficial tool for all drivers of electric vehicles."

In addition, the EcoHub app will include what is currently being called a "Ticker" screen that shows drivers additional national values. This would include values for Gallons of Fuel Saved, Total Miles Driven, and Total EV Miles Driven.

The app will be tested at Pecan Street Inc. which is based at the University of Texas. Pecan Street is the first non-profit research and development program that focuses on energy, wireless and electronic technology in the U.S.

OnStar is the global leading provider of connected safety, security and mobility solutions and advanced information technology.
