Robert Pattinson appeared on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" last night, and laughed a lot and didn't dance around the topic of his breakup with Kristen Stewart.
Or, he mostly didn't dance around it. Kristen Stewart was never mentioned by name during the show, but there were numerous indirect references to the Hollywood couple's breakup, beginning with Pattinson and Jon Stewart breaking out pints of Ben & Jerry's after Pattinson sat down.
The two joked about how there was a larger crowd outside the studio than when Stewart has had the President of the United States on his show.
At one point Pattinson looked down and exclaimed "I have no idea how to approach this now!"
It turns out he was talking about his overflowing pint of melted ice cream, but it was clear that Stewart was momentarily uncertain if he meant something larger.
Pattinson also joked that he could eat the ice cream because he would pop out of his spanx.
He also said that one of his biggest problems in life is that he's cheap, and hasn't hired a publicist to deal with situations like the one in which he finds himself now, though he didn't come out and say what the situation is.
Stewart referenced it when he said that breakups are hard when you're young.
But, he said, ice cream would help Pattinson through it. Then Stewart spooned ice cream and mimed a stereotypical breakup conversation between girlfriends and intoned, "You are better off, kick her to the curb." Pattinson laughed, perhaps uneasily, as he did throughout much of the interview.
The conversation then changed to Cosmopolis, the new movie directed by David Cronenberg in which Pattinson stars with Juliet Binoche.
Toward the end of the interview Pattinson called on Twilight's fans to make Cosmopolis's opening weekend bigger than The Dark Knight's.
He then joked that this would be a challenge since his movie was only showing in six theaters.
Stewart said it didn't matter, as they had probably lost half the TV audience when they switched the conversation to Pattinson's movie.
