Volkswagen has named the production version of the Crossblue concept as "Atlas." VW earlier trademarked 2017 Volkswagen Atlas in the United States.
Volkswagen has not revealed any images to show the finished version of the car. Nor has it confirmed the production Crossblue's name. But, leaked images in August gave a glimpse of the vehicle.
Here's what we know about the 2017 Volkswagen Atlas so far.
Look
It is going to be a seven-seater. The 2013 Crossblue concept will have distinct features and evolve from the typical SUV look. It will have squared-off wheel arches and a beefy bonnet. The appearance will be rugged.
Engines
According to the Crossblue concept in 2013, the car should have 187bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine with a couple of electric motors, an 114bhp one and a 54bhp one. One of those is mounted next to the combustion engine at the front, while the other is at the back. Together, it gets 302bhp power, along with a 516lb-ft peak torque figure.
Name
Volkswagen has named its crossover models with T so far. Notable examples are Tiguan and Touareg. But, VW breaks convention with the 2017 Volkswagen Atlas.
"Two or three years ago, it would've been a no-go that the region decides an individual name," Auto News quoted VW Group of America CEO Hinrich Woebcken as saying in July. "This is already an early sign that Wolfsburg is willing to let go."
Front-Wheel Drive
The Crossblue production model comes with front-wheel drive. The four-wheel drive will come as an additional option. It is likely that powerful models will have it as a standard feature, Auto Car reports.
Debut
VW has been tight-lipped about the car and its production. It is speculated that the car will debut at the 2017 Detroit motor show. The car may only target Chinese and US markets, and leave the UK market.
