BMW To Pump in $388 Million For Mini In England

BMW is set to pump in $388 million over the next three years to increase production capacity at its U.K. factories.

"The investment would support its international growth plans for the Mini, which will expand its current line-up of seven models to include up to 10 different body styles in the medium term," said Harald Kruger, Member of the Board Management of BMW AG at Mini Plant in Oxford.

Kruger added that in the next three years more investment would be made to increase the production capacity at its manufacturing plants in Oxford, Birmingham and Swindon.

"The investment is about securing jobs for the future," Graham Biggs, BMW Group U.K. Corporate Communications Director told BBC News. "We tend to build cars where we sell them, so the U.K. is a very important market for us- about the fourth largest in the world - so building Minis, Rolls-Royces and engines here makes a great deal of sense."

BMW AG launched its much hyped and most awaited Mini Roadster in January and also followed by a convertible version of the Mini Coupe.

Apart from increasing its production capacity aimed in England, BMW has several other plans to see the same results in other European countries. The car company has strong presence in Austria where it has a tie-up with Magna Steyr which builds the Mini Countryman Sports Utility Vehicles.

"Our preferred option is to establish a contract manufacturer as a satellite production as close to our U.K. operations as possible, at the Nedcar plant in the Netherlands, with whom BMW is in discussions," Kruger said.

The Mini currently includes other versions such as hatchback, the Clubman estate, Countryman off-roader, Coupe, Convertible, Roadster and Clubvan transporter. Its latest version, the Mini Paceman, has a blend of SUV and a coupe and it could become a bestseller in England because of its performance and luxury interiors.
