According to research study released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), which is a non-governmental organization tracking auto theft and insurance fraud, the streets of Fresno have the highest incidences of car theft.

According to the study, Fresno has seen the highest number of auto thefts reaching to 808.25 thefts per 100,000 cars in 2011. The city, which has a minimal population of just half a million, also topped the list last year. Seven out of 10 cities with the highest number of stolen cars are in California which also includes Modesto, Bakersfield and Stockton.

"California has always had the most vehicle thefts and always will," Director of Public Affairs at the NCB, Frank Scafidi told reporters. "The climate is more conducive to keeping cars in better shape, and there are many more vehicles in California [than other parts of the country]."

Golden State has more vehicles and more people than any other state; with that combination, "you get more vehicle theft activity," Scafidi said.

The NICB has been researching and measuring auto theft cases in 366 cities based on registration data and insurance reports.

The FBI  states the U.S. saw a 3.3 percent decrease in car thefts from 2010 to 2011. However, in 2010, more than 230,000 cars were stolen in the entire country. Auto experts believe vehicle owners should be better equipped with their latest technology in preventing auto thefts.
