Marcos Ambrose took the lead position in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for Sunday's race at Sonoma.

He completed the 10-run, 1.99-mile course in 1 minute, 15.203 seconds to win the pole.

"I was just in awe of that lap," crew chief Todd Parrott told reporters.

"I tried to act like a wombat and put my head on the ground and just wait," Ambrose told the media after winning the pole. "Knowing how important starting at the front is in a race in which it's so difficult to pass. I've got as good a chance as anyone to win the race."

Ambrose and Jeff Gordon will start their races from front row with Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle, will begin from the second row.

"I was more nervous running 90 mph than I was running 20," Ambrose said. "You just have to be really precise with your marks and very aggressive and carry momentum through these tight corners."

Ambrose, who races for Richard Petty Motorsports, won the pole at Michigan with a blistering speed of 203 mph which was the fastest qualifying speed in NASCAR competition in 25 years and the third-fastest pole speed ever.
