The BMW i8 Concept is not your typical plug-in vehicle.First-off, it has a top-speed of 155 mph - that's right, 155 mph - and it can go from 0 to 62 in just 4.6 seconds, according to BMW.
Of course, it isn't your typical plug-in vehicle. The i8 features an electronic motor to power the front wheels and a traditional gasoline engine drives the rear. This means it can be a front-, rear- or all-wheel drive vehicle, depending on which power sources are running. An "energy tunnel" that runs down the middle of the car connects the two axels.
The i8 has a fuel economy of about 94 mpg, and can travel 20 miles on the electronic motor alone, according to BMW.
"The Concept car BMW Vision EfficientDynamics created excitement and very positive feedback at the IAA 2009. The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics made it clear that an emotional sports car with the fuel economy of a small car is no contradiction and could soon be reality," BMW states.
The i8 will also include a number of unique features to contribute to its astonishingly high fuel economy, including a totally flat bottom to reduce aerodynamic drag as much as possible, according to Automobile Magazine. In addition, it features a navigation system that will pre-determine which powertains to use during which points in the journey in order to keep energy efficiency as high as possible.
The BMW i8 is still a concept car at this point, and according to Automobile Magazine, the car's styling may likely change before it goes on sale in 2013. Given the high amount of technology and research that went into this car, it's likely to sport a high price tag. Some estimates place it at $171,000.
