In what could be described as the disappointing fiscal for Toyota, the U.S. Government has issued fresh orders to probe into fires that can start in the doors of various models from the company.
The fresh investigation orders will now include 1.4 million cars and Sport Utility Vehicles (UVs) of Toyota, which were produced and distributed between 2007 to 2009. The investigation began in Feb. and involved more than 800,000 Camrys and RAV4 SUVs produced in 2007.
"Certain Camry models from the 2008 and 2009 model years, as well as some 2007 to 2009 Yaris subcompacts and all 2008 Highlander Hybrid SUVs, have been added to the investigation," reads a statement from the U.S governement. "The vehicles were built from September 2006 through August of 2008," reads the statement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). And the agency further adds that Toyota Motors and the U.S. Government have received 161 complaints on their vehicles involving with fire. And no serious injuries have been reported from the technical snag."
"All the vehicles use the same power window switch in the driver's door. The switches can overheat and cause fires," statement said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has upgraded the investigation to a technical analysis and it will take further action after the final reports come on the reported complaints.
"Owners of the Toyotas who smell smoke or feel heat in the doors should call their dealers or take them in for an inspection. The company is co-operating with NHTSA in the investigation," Brian Lyons, official spokesman for Toyota said.
