Once considered a concept car, Porsche's third generation Boxster finally makes it to the world market after a 19-year absesnce.
The Boxster made its debut at the 1993 Detroit Motor Show. Porsche presented the model as a concept car filled with all the types of features considered futuristic at the time. Production for the first Boxster began in 1996 and was known as, 986. Jim Willows, Product Manager, says that the Boxster, which is known as the 981, is "the car that saved the company."
The second Boxster was known as the 987 and the latest third generation car, which pays tribute to its predecessors, is known as the 981. The new car, depending on the model, can be almost 77 pounds lighter and fuel efficiency has been increased by almost 15 percent.
Chris Craft, new Managing Director of Porsche GB, says that the latest Boxster "is now part of our heritage."
The latest Boxster served as inpiration for a few other Porsche models ready to be launched. Upcoming luxury sports car such as 918 Spyder is also said to be inspired from the Boxster.
"It's a great time to be at Porsche," Craft said. "And he is very new to the brand, moving from Volkswagen in Milton Keynes to Porsche in Reading a month ago."
