A former Uber driver created a car sharing app that is primarily dedicated to women. Dubbed “Chariot For Women,” the startup features all-female drivers and passengers for the protection and comfort of women.
The Boston-based business was founded by ex-Uber driver Michael Pelletz and will start collecting passengers on Apr. 19, 2016. “The premise is the same as all the other ridesharing services. There’s a driving app and a client app, except that what makes us unique is our safety feature that other apps forgot to do,” Pelletz told TechCrunch.
Digital Trends reports that Pelletz was referring to a code that Chariot forwards to both the driver and passenger after the latter requests a ride. To be successfully picked up, the driver and passenger should check that their codes match. Passengers also do not have to worry about surge charging. Furthermore, Safer Places was tapped to check the background of all its drivers. Chariot also works with the Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check in Massachusetts to guarantee the safety of all clients.
Chariot For Women follows very stringent standards to maintain the safety of its female passengers as well as maintain its good reputation. Pelletz also mentioned that trans passengers who identify themselves as women can also drive and ride with the company without any issue. He explained that their service was meant to protect fundamental liberties and to put an end to gender-based inequality that exists in security.
Pelletz is also ready for men who might challenge them for offering their service to one gender only. He said that they are ready for any possible legal battle. He cited that women around the world are being attacked and harassed by male drivers. During his eight-month stint as an Uber driver, he never heard of any male passenger complaining.
The official website stated the Chariot For Women was created specifically to ensure the safety, pleasure and comfort of female passengers, as well as to support charities and foundations that are focused on women. Part of the fare of their clients will be donated to chosen rotating non-profit groups. Two percent of its proceeds will be given to charity.
Pelletz said that their goal is to eliminate the issue of gender-based security inequality in five years.
