The quest to build cars is everything to a designer. But for Gordon Murray, McLaren Formula One developer, reinventing cars by bringing in the latest and advanced eco-friendly features is much more than a dream.

Murray's passion for reinventing new versions of compact cars started in a traffic jam. Stuck on one of London's busy suburban roads in 1993 in his luxury sedan, Gordon's mind sparked with ideas of building a compact car, which would ease the tensions of traffic.

Murray's sedan was surrounded by noise making from similar sedans blocking his car from all around. It was then when Murray made a promise that sometime in the future he would build a compact which, will not only be feasible in terms of fuel efficiency, but also save a lot space when parked outside.

Nineteen years later, Murray comes out of a small boxy car parked in the workshop south of London -- promised fulfilled.

Murray's fleet of compact cars are 8-feet in length and 11 inches shorter than Daimler's Smart micro car.

When asked the inspiration behind the micro car design, Murray said his design was a small attempt to reverse the way automobiles have been designed for years. He wanted to break out of the same traditional direction that automakers have been going for the last 100 years.
