As a tribute to how the automobile industry has shaped the American culture and society, one of the largest car museums in the country has opened in Tacoma, Washington.
The museum, which opened on Saturday, cost $60 million to build and has been titled "LeMay - America's Car Museum." Tthe museum exhibits of about 150 vehicles between them, some of the models are rare and many are from the private collection of the late Harold LeMay.
According to The News Tribune, Harold LeMay was included in the name of the museum because he was a self-made Pierce Country millionaire who made his fortune in refuse collection and real estate. He had a vision for the car museum before he died in 2000 at the age of 81.
The Guinness World of Records reports LeMay had more than 3,000 cars, trucks motorcycles and all kinds of vehicles in his private museum and was also listed as the world record holder for keeping the maximum number of privately owned vehicles.
More than 43 vehicles are kepted on display in the LeMay Car Museum during the grand opening ceremony. Sources say that most of the other vehicle loaners from other collectors have been donated from private loaners, collectors, museums and corporations from as far away as Michigan, Southern California and Florida.
"If all this thing was about Harold LeMay, nobody would care about the museum after a while. I told everybody as soon as I got here, if that's what this is all about, you're throwing your money away," said David Madeira, President and CEO of LeMay Car Museum. "What this needs to be about is America's love affair with the automobile industry."
