A rented car from U.S. is now permitted to drive in Canada, according to a newly revised Motors Vehicle Safety Act, which will take an effect on June 1.
Prior the changes, a rented car from the U.S. was not allowed for entry into the borders of Canada. With the scheduled changes to be carried from June onward, citizens are expecting that it may loosen the holding on driving vehicles in Canada. Under the old Motors Vehicle Safety Act, Canadians were not allowed to drive cars rented from the U.S.
Rob Nicholson,Justice Minister of Canada, and Maxime Bernier, the Junior Minister of Tourism, made an official announcement on Thursday that the changes have been made after looking at the consensus of the public mandate. They also made a public announcement of how the federal government received thousands of complaints from the Canadian public about the flexibility of the law on driving rented vehicles in the country.
With the revised Motors Vehicle Safety Act, a Canadian can temporarily import a rented car from U.S. for non-business purposes and can be driven across the Canada for no more than 30 days.
"There have been complaints from the past three years on withdrawing the control over not renting a U.S. car in Canada," said Justice Minister Rob Nicholson.
"We have been collecting a mandate from the public on whether to make changes or go ahead with the same old rules. But the public seem to be expecting more flexibility in terms of driving U.S. rented car in Canada. So, the federal government just went ahead with it and has loosened the tight grip on the old legislation in the Motor Vehicle Safety Act," Nicholson added.
