The Union of Concerned Scientists said in a report that electric vehicles in United States can help save the money on fuel and are less polluting, compared to most gasoline vehicles.

The report also said that electric vehicles are preferred even in places where electricity is made by burning coal.

“Drivers should feel confident that owning an electric vehicle is a good choice for reducing global warming pollution, cutting fuel costs and slashing oil consumption,” said Don Anair, Senior Engineer of UCS’s clean vehicles program.

Owners of electric vehicles can save between $750 to $1,200 in a year. The calculation is based on the assumption that owners will drive 11,000 miles and the gasoline vehicles can get 27 miles per gallon at $3.50 per gallon of gas price.

UCS revealed that the study is the first attempt to analyze emissions from vehicles charged on a power grid of electricity made from fuels such as coal and natural gas.
