BMW MINI Camping – April Fool’s Hoax

The announcement that MINI coming up with a camping trailer and a roof-top tent turned out to be an April Fool’s hoax.

BMW Group published a press release dated April 1 that MINI Cowley Caravan and MINI Swindon Roof Top Tent will be available, which was enthusiastically received by campers. However, the BMW Group contact person Tanja Kirchner confirmed that it was an April Fool’s hoax.

“[T]his press release is definitely a April 1st hoax,” wrote Kirchner in an email to Auto World News on Monday.

The release originally stated that the “Cowley” caravan will offer “everything you need to pitch camp in comfort: two welcoming sleeping berths, a twin-burner gas-stove, a water tank with pump and dish-washing facility, a solar module to charge the on-board battery and a 230-volt power connection to supply the refrigerator, TV/DVD and hi-fi stereo system.”

And for the tent, this is what the company had:

“Having found a fittingly dreamy place to catch a stylish night’s shut-eye, it’s just a case of climbing up onto the roof of the MINI, lifting up the upper half of the roof-top tent box and plumping your pillows ready for impact. The roof-top tent works a treat, whether the location for your beauty sleep is the English shires or the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Indeed, should you have chosen one of nature’s livelier spots to spend the night, the elevated sleeping position will keep passers-by from the animal world at arm’s length.”

It wasn’t the first time the BMW is coming up with April Fool’s day advert. Last year, the group announced a driverless running coach where it feature uses a “combination of ConnectedDrive technologies and surround view cameras to enable the car to follow the runner, at a safe distance, while pounding the pavement.” The year before, it announced a BMW election badge.
