Ever wanted to build your own go-cart? A new Kickstarter project has you in mind.
The PlyFly Go-Kart from Flatworks purports to offer a complete wooden roadster in three boxes that is gas-powered and can be assembled in a day or less.
The project has more than $10,000 pledged so far of a $36,000 goal that needs to be completed by March 31.
Wood was selected as the main building material because it is easy to worth with and requires tools that everyday consumers have at home or can buy in most hardware stores, according to the project description. The team behind the PlyFly Go-Kart says that eight prototypes have been built so far and that the last two were used to test the assembly process and put the suppliers through their paces.
PlyFly offers "the thrill of building, sharing, and customizing embodied in the creation of an iconic American object: a gasoline powered go-kart," the Kickstarter description reads. "We have done most of the heavy lifting. All you need to do is grab your sense of adventure, a few tools and assemble it."
The kit should be ready to go, including the wooden structural pieces, the hardware and the engine in their three respective boxes. The wooden components are built by Flatworks in Newport, R.I.
The description makes putting the PlyFly Go-Kart together sound easy enough, promising that "assembly is a breeze and the end product is shockingly strong and light."
The go-cart is available with two engine options: a 2.5-horsepower engine designed for flat terrain and slower speeds and a quicker 4-horsepower engine that can sustain larger passengers and navigate hills.
A pledge of $70 gets you a scale model of the cart that can be displayed on a shelf. The minimum pledge to receive a PlyFly Go-Kart is $745; backers who pledge that amount or more are promised a 2.5-horsepower-engined model.
