Takata to Ramp-up Output of Replacement Inflators

In an effort to replace a large amount of air bag inflators, Takata Corp. will double production to 900,000 units a month starting this September.

Takata spokesman Jared Levy announced Tuesday that the company will boost output of replacement inflators for car companies that have called back nearly 25 million vehicles since 2008.

Takata has completed the ramp-up of two new assembly lines at its Monclova, Mexico plant, according to Automotive News. Monthly production of replacement inflators will jump from 300,000 to 450,000.

The company's global network of plants will now product approximately 900,000 units a month, though Takata hasn't said which factories will produce them yet.

Takata is under a lot of pressure from regulators, rival suppliers and automakers all over the world to increase production.

Automakers like Honda have expanded recalls that originally focused on humid areas like Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Florida after being persuaded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

With a monthly production rate of 450,000 units, Takata would need a few years to fill the order backlog, according to Bloomberg.

Autoliv, the top air bag manufacturer in the world, said last month it has signed a number of contracts with several automakers to send out 25 million inflators to fix potentially defective air bags. Honda said back in October that it will buy some replacements from Daicel, and TRW Holdings has said it is willing to make replacements.

A report was released this weekend saying that Takata chose to ignore the warnings of engineer Mark Lillie, who told the company that using the chemical compound ammonium nitrate in company air bags would be a big mistake.

The air bags are deadly since they can be deployed with too much force, causing them to rupture and shoot out metal fragments at occupants.
