Minnesota Unveils Special License Plate for Women Veterans

Minnesota is now offering license plates that honor women who have served in the military.

Available for around $20 with application and fees, the newly designed plates say "Woman Veteran" and are the first license plates in Minnesota that specifically honor women who are veterans, according to the Associated Press.

Women who would like to purchase the new plates should bring their discharge papers to the Department of Motor Vehicles and request the Women Veterans' License Plate.

A group of women who have served in the military is scheduled to meet today at the Town Square DMV in St. Paul, Minn., to buy the first plates.

Minnesota has 29,000 women veterans, according to materials supporting the new license plates.

The new license plate design is "a small way Minnesota can recognize, thank and honor" women who have served in the armed forces, said state Sen. Alice Johnson, who authored the bill.

The honor was made possible by the Women's Veteran's Initiative, according to Northlands News Center. The goal for the year is to have 500 "Woman Veteran" license plates on vehicles in the state by the end of 2015.

"Although female veterans have served in every conflict America has been engaged in, many times they are not recognized for their contribution to our country," Johnson said in a Women's Veteran's Initiative press release.

Nine other states have plate options that specifically honor women who have served, including Wisconsin and Nevada.

The plates are intended to bring greater visibility to women veterans and honor them for their service.

"If part of that is a license plate and that's what helps people identify with their service, take pride in it, and share experience than I think that's a great idea," Stacey Rhodes, a veteran working at the Duluth Vet Center, told NNCNow.
