Ford is recalling nearly 20,000 Transit Connect cargo vans from the 2014 model year in North America.

The 19,825 affected vehicles have an exterior plastic panel on the sliding doors that may not have been adhered properly, something that could "result in noise, a water leak, a loose panel or separation of the plastic panel from the vehicle while driving," according to the automaker.

The recall includes certain 2014 Transit Connect cargo van two-panel vehicles built between Aug. 9, 2013 and Sept. 20, 2014 as well as select 2014 Transit Connect cargo van one-panel vehicles built between Aug. 9, 2013 and Sept. 20, 2014.

For the safety campaign, Ford dealerships "will remove and reinstall the sliding door plastic panels using proper materials and procedures," the automaker said.

The Transit recall is scheduled to start the week of Jan. 12, Edmunds.com reported. Affected owners can call their dealerships and also reach Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673.

Transit vans have seen rising sales in the last month and have quadrupled since September. Ford delivered 4,851 Transit vans last month, a rise of 114.9 percent from 2,257 in October.
