A line of rechargeable battery packs used for smartphones, laptops and other devices has been recalled this week due to fire risk.
The recall affects Goal Zero's Sherpa brand 50 and 120, which are connected into A/C wall outlets, 12-volt car chargers or an attachable solar panel for recharging, the Associated Press reported.
Around 10,000 battery packs in the U.S. and 110 in Canada are included in the recall. Affected battery packs were sold at REI and other sporting goods stores nationwide as well as online at Amazon.com and Goalzero.com between March 2010 and November 2013. They retail for between $200 and $400 each.
Consumers should watch for battery packs with serial numbers starting with S/N 11002 or S/N 11102 because they can overheat, resulting in a fire. The silver and black battery packs have Goal Zero and Sherpa 50 or 120 printed on one side, while the serial number should be located on the other side.
The recalled battery packs can bulge and melt after overcharging and overheating.
