Tropical Storm Wutip Update: 75 People Missing Off Coast of China After Two Boats Sink

Tropical storm Wutip left at least 75 fishermen missing in central Vietnam earlier today, Sept. 30, according to the Associated Press.

The storm has cut out power lines, damaged 1,000 homes, and uprooted trees. There was no immediate report of flooding or structural damage as of press time.

Wutip weakened from a typhoon to a tropical storm by the time it made landfall according to Vietnam's national weather center. It was moving with sustained winds of 73 mph, according to the report.

Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from the storm's path since this weekend.

Wutip blew the roofs off of at least 1,000 houses in one nearby district alone, according to local government official Pham Huu Thao.

Schools in five different central provinces closed and the coast guard warned 61,000 fishing boats and their 303,000 crew members to get out of the water.

At least two fishing boats sank near the coast of the Paracel Islands, and contact with a third has been lost, according to the Associated Press.

Wutip has been the strongest typhoon to father off Vietnam during the current season.
