Cadillac Setting Up House in NYC's Hudson Square

Cadillac's new headquarters--the luxury brand's declaration of at least some independence from General Motors--will inhabit more than 34,000 square feet in New York City's Hudson Square neighborhood.

The carmaker will make its new home in the top two floors of the 16-story building at 330 Hudson, the Detroit News reported.

"We are creating Cadillac as a very clear division, with a very clearly defined boundary, and it will be far more self-sufficient and autonomous than what has been the case before," GM President Dan Ammann said in a September statement quoted by the News. "We will not have the Cadillac business fragmented across all the functions that exist today. They'll be a cohesive team with consolidated leadership."

The luxury name, which is one of the world's longest-running brands at 112 years old, has been working to reestablish itself, aiming to expand worldwide and bring in younger consumers.

Cadillac's chief has said that the new headquarters will likely open in the second quarter of next year with around 120 employees. The shift from Michigan will involve moving about 30 people working for Cadillac.

"The addition of a headquarters office in New York is a key step in Cadillac's ongoing global expansion," Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen said in a statement. "There is no better atmosphere in which to better immerse ourselves into luxury consumer and brand expertise. We look forward to being a good neighbor there, starting in spring of 2015."

Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell estimated that the new office would hold around 50 employees when it opens in the spring. Establishing separate headquarters was the natural next step for Cadillac, he told AutoWorldNews by phone.

"You've grown and expanded the brand up to a point ... this is an organizational move to equip ourselves to move to the next level," Caldwell said, noting that Cadillac's technical and design teams will remain in Michigan.

New York City was an easy selection since "this is a natural hub of activity for luxury brands," he told AutoWorldNews.

The luxury carmaker plans to launch a new top-of-the-line model next year, GM announced in September.
