New York Real Estate Available for Just $24.95: .NYC Web Domain Opens

New York and the Internet are two things that have become overwhelmingly crowded. The two spaces, physical and virtual, overlap today when the .nyc top-level domain goes on sale to the general public, USA TODAY reported.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a California-based nonprofit, has been busy reviewing domain name applications for nearly three years as some 1,300 domain names start rolling out.

"Domain names are 21st century real estate," said Mike McLaughlin, senior vice president and general manager of domains for GoDaddy.com, which has been authorized to sell the newly approved names. "The theme is the increasing personalization and targeting of the Internet."

Expected to be available in the next few years, the new domain names will expand Web real estate. Some of the new names that have already been approved include .photos, .expert, .guide and .bikes along with names inspired by places such as .vegas, .london and .miami.

Names can be purchased from registry websites like Godaddy.com, eNom.com and Name.com. A .nyc name is available on sale for $24.95, which purchases a one-year registration. The regular retail price is $39.99 per year.

Google and Amazon have been skirmishing over the possession of coveted domain names like .buy, which the latter snagged for $4.6 million last month, according to Politico. The companies will face off again in November to see who bids higher for .cloud, .book, .wow and .movie.

"If you are up against [a company like] Amazon or Google, you need to come to the table ready to bid with a considerable amount of cash," said Shaul Jolles, whose firm Dot Registry won the .tech name domain against Google and other companies, as quoted by Politico. "If you don't win the bid, there is no compensation for your time, concept or investment."
