Donate $500 To Test Your Own Drone Detection System

Oregon-based Domestic Drone Countermeasure has launched a Kickstarter project intended to address safety and privacy concerns surrounding the growing presence of drones.

Called a Personal Drone Detection System, the project has been in the works for more than a year and is patent-pending, PCMag.com reported.

"There are legitimate uses for domestic drones, but there are still concerns about privacy and surveillance by various entities," said founder Amy Ciesielka, as quoted by The Verge.

While it can't shield you from military drones, the system should eventually maintain your privacy and counter unauthorized drones, according to the Kickstarter page. The detection hardware won't attack other devices, but it will purportedly get your attention with an alarm or through a message to your mobile device.

Working through three boxes that create a grid, the system "can triangulate moving transmitters," the company said. It can be directed remotely through a smartphone or other device with wireless connection.

"Our intent is to keep your privacy safe from your neighbors and people you may not know who are flying small drones near your home or office," the company stated. "The Personal Drone Detection Systems are intended to counter small, personal drones with cameras and other sensors that are not being regulated."

Domestic Drone Countermeasures is essentially looking for testing sites for the system. The first 50 backers who pledge $500 or more will be among the first testing groups to give feedback on the drone project, while higher donations will receive second-generation systems and testing instructions.

"Our first prototype detection systems are effective at identifying drones in the lab, but we need more real world testing scenarios," the company said.

As of time of publication, the Kickstarter project had raised about $740 of an $8,500 goal with 25 days left to be funded.
