2015 Chevrolet Trax Features Roomy Interior, New Safety Systems

General Motors launched the new Chevrolet Trax crossover on Tuesday at the New York Auto Show.

Facing off with the latest Jeep Renegade model, the Trax will be available in the U.S. early next year, the Detroit Free Press reported. Introduced in 2012, the Trax is already being sold in around 60 countries, and more than 90,000 have been shipped so far.

"Trax offers customers another option in the Chevrolet family and will be a strong competitor in the emerging small-SUV market, which is expected to grow more than 80 percent by 2016," said Alan Batey, Chevrolet senior vice president, as quoted by the Detroit Free Press.

Roomy with about 50 cubic feet of storage space inside, the 2015 Trax runs on a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and offers fuel economy of about 26 miles per gallon for city driving and 34 mpg on the highway, the Los Angeles Times reported.

It has options for all-wheel drive as well as Wi-Fi connectivity, a 7-inch touchscreen display on the dashboards and iPhone compatibility. The Trax also features a rearview camera, technology that will soon be required on all vehicles of a certain size.

A rear park assist system is also available as an option, while 10 airbags are standard.

The new crossover is basically a twin of GM's Buick Encore, the L.A. Times noted. While GM hasn't yet announced pricing for the Trax, it will likely be close to the 2013 Encore, which started at $24,950 for standard models.
