Jaguar Debuts Land Rover Discovery Concept

Jaguar Land Rover announced a new upcoming lineup on Monday, a family of Land Rover Discovery vehicles slated to be available next year.

The company launched the new vehicles ahead of the New York Auto Show with the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept, Edmunds.com reported.

Serving as a first look at the new Land Rover Discovery family, the concept has futuristic technology that includes smart glass displays, laser headlights and controls that can be directed with gestures.

"We are on the verge of a new age of Discovery with modern new vehicles that will expand our business around the world," Phil Popham, Jaguar Land Rover group marketing director, said in a statement quoted by Edmunds.

The first vehicle in the new Land Rover Discovery lineup will likely be a compact SUV similar to the Land Rover Freelander/LR2. While the concept isn't expected to be a replacement to the current Discovery model, it stands as a preview to the lineup's features.

"The current Land Rover Discovery (sold as the LR4 in North America) is a stand-alone model which will transform over time into a range of all-new Discovery vehicles," Jaguar Land Rover said in a statement quoted by Edmunds. "This design future is represented by the Discovery Vision Concept, and will redefine Land Rover's approach to premium and capable SUVs."

Jaguar Land Rover has also partnered with Virgin Galactic, Richard Branson's commercial space flight business. Unveiled on board the U.S.S. Intrepid, the new vehicle concept sat beside a scale model of Virgin Galactic's SpaceShip Two, which is said to be the first-ever commercial spaceship.
