2016 Chevrolet Camaro To Feature 'Evolutionary' Design

The redesigned Chevrolet Camaro should look familiar: The 2016 model is actually an "evolutionary" restyling that sticks closely to the current Camaro, Edmunds.com reported.

Expected to launch at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the new Camaro should be at dealerships sometime next year.

"The difference between the existing and redesigned (Camaro) is not drastically different," an industry source who has seen the 2016 model told Edmunds. "It looks like a worked-over current-model Camaro. It is on a different platform, so that is a significant difference, but when they modified it to be on a different platform, the styling did not change that much."

While the sheet metal has been changed and the car has been re-engineered, the exterior likely won't look much different.

First launched in 2009, the current Camaro model sold around 80,600 last year, according to Edmunds. The 2016 Camaro will be built on the same rear-wheel drive platform as the Cadillac ATS and CTS, industry sources told Edmunds.

The car's main rival will be the 2015 Mustang, which goes on sale this fall, Edmunds reported.

A Chevrolet spokesman wouldn't comment specifically on the 2016 Camaro, but he said any new models will continue the brand's "expressive" style.

"We won't discuss future product, but I will tell you that any Camaro we do will have expressive design and will evoke the passion the previous-generation Camaros have done," Chevrolet spokesman Mike Albano told Edmunds. "Camaro always has kind of moved the heart and the next generation will do the same thing when you see it on the road."
