A driver on a beer delivery in the Chelsea area of Manhattan made the mistake of hiding the truck's keys under the seat, allowing someone to steal the vehicle and its alcoholic contents on Monday.

The drivers were delivering some Heineken while the truck was stolen; the thief scored the truck, 11 kegs of Heineken beer and three 24-can packs, along with three cases of Georgi Vodka, Jalopnik reported via DNA Info.

Reports seemed to disagree on the exact amount of vodka, the New York Post describing, "He came back five minutes later and his heart sunk--the booze mobile, full of 11 kegs and 10 cases of vodka, was gone."

Police said the truck's driver, a 51-year-old man, and his partner were parked to deliver beer to catering company Pinch Food Design around 12:45 p.m. on Monday.

When the pair returned 10 minutes later, the green 2005 Freightliner truck was gone. Surveillance cameras caught the vehicle going into the Bronx around 2 p.m. the same day. The truck hadn't been seen since, police told DNA Info on Friday morning.

Later in the day, the New York Post reported that the truck was recovered in the Bronx. All but one 24-pack of beer had disappeared, sources told the New York Post.

The thieves also apparently broke open a safe in the truck, but it was empty at the time.

"It's funny people these days are crazy. There was a snow storm and it was cold outside, maybe they just wanted to stay warm," said one witness.

He added, "There was a lot of snow, so they had one-up on the cops [during the getaway]."

The driver, who has worked for the trucking firm for 14 years, was suspended for four days. The Heineken stop was his 24th delivery of the day and close to the end of his shift.

The vehicle is owned by Long Island-based Demon Trucking Inc.

Police are still investigating the incident. Heineken and Demon Trucking did not immediately respond to requests for comment from DNA Info.
