Car Color Says More Than You Think; White Is Most Popular Choice

Your mood may influence what you're wearing, but did you know that your chosen car color says something about you, too?

Using the Axalta Automotive Color Popularity Report for 2013, experts dissected what draws people to the most popular colors as well as why some unusual shades are chosen.

Gender, age and location all influence car color, along with the model of car chosen, Bankrate.com reported.

"The personality of the vehicle is as important as the personality of the buyer," Nancy Lockhart, a color marketing manager with Axalta Coating Systems, a global car-coating business in Detroit, told Bankrate. "The vehicle style, design and branding can influence color choices."

White remained the most popular color for car buyers, gaining 6 percent for 29 percent of vehicles altogether; black was second with 20 percent of sales, while silver, gray and red followed, according to the Axalta report.

People driving white cars "like to present a fresh, young, modern face to the outside world," Bankrate reported.

Associated with purity, white also suggests taste and elegance, according to Marcie Cooperman, a professor of color theory at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.

Black, the second most popular choice, brings to mind sophistication and control. The choice is "the sophisticate's color," environmental psychologist Sally Augustin told Bankrate.

"Black became the number one color for luxury [cars]," Lockhart said.

If you've chosen silver for your car, you're likely going for a blend of security and style, Cooperman told Bankrate.

Those who are driving gray vehicles are probably looking to blend in. Distinct from silver, gray is more nondescript and connotes dignity and tradition.

"The gray car driver doesn't want to stand out," Cooperman told Bankrate.

Red cars are obviously more flashy and according to Augustin, red projects action and power.

"Go-getter types may pick a red car," she told Bankrate. For men, choosing red is similar to flexing muscles, while for women, the color exemplifies confidence.
