Self-Driving Technology Could Bump up Car Prices by $10,000

By the time self-driving vehicles arrive in U.S. showrooms in 2025, the technology will cost an extra $7,000 to $10,000 compared to the vehicle's original base price.

Approximately 230,000 self-driving vehicles will be sold in 2025, according to the same study.

"(Prices will drop) around $5,000 in 2030 and about $3,000 in 2035 when no driver controls are available," said IHS Automotive in statement.

By 2035, sales will reach 11.8 million a year, according to IHS Automotive.

"The study anticipates that nearly all of the vehicles in use are likely to be self-driving cars or self-driving commercial vehicles sometime after 2050," researchers said regarding the news.

By 2025, sales of self-driving vehicles will represent nine percent of the 129 million global auto sales expected that year, said IHS analyst Egil Juliussen, according to Reuters.

A number of automakers have already confirmed they're working on building self-driving vehicles like: Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Google, Nissan, Tesla, and Toyota.

Earlier this year, Daimler, GM, Nissan, Volvo in particular have said they'll have an autonomous vehicle available for purchase by 2020.

Tesla has talked with Google about self-driving vehicle, but recently said self-driving technology was "a few years from production."
