A British family left their home after dozens of spiders "sprouted" from a banana they purchased at a local supermarket.
Consi Taylor, 29, was in the middle of eating a banana when she saw a small white patch on the piece of fruit that wasn't mold.
"I had a closer look and was horrified to see they were spiders," Taylor said to The Sun. "They were hatching out on the table, scurrying around on my carpet."
Taylor then took a picture of the spiders and sent it to a local pest company for advice. They responded saying they appeared to be Brazilian wandering spiders, a deadly species with Guinness World Records designed the world's most venomous spider in 2010.
The family evacuated their home and had to have it fumigated, according to the paper.
"The truth is often very mundane," Steven Falk, an entomologist with the invertebrate conservation trust Buglife, said to ABC News. "A baby spider doesn't have big enough jaws to bite you."
Even in their natural environment, only one in every 500 spiderlings lives to adulthood, according to Stuart Hine, of the National History Museum in London.
Sainsbury's, the supermarket that sold the bananas, originally gave the Taylor's a $16 gift card but later said it was only an "initial act of good will." The supermarket has since given the family "a substantial cash sum," according to a statement.
"We're very sorry and have apologized to Mr. and Mrs. Taylor," the store said in the statement. "We do have rigorous controls on imported products at all stages, from harvesting to transportation, which is why this is so rare."
