The U.S. National Hurricane Center confirmed today, Nov. 4, that Tropical Storm Sonia has been downgraded to a tropical depression as it hit land in Mexico.

The center, located in Miami, said the center of Sonia had reached the coast of Sinaloa near the city of El Dorado as of press time.

Sonia's maximum sustained winds have decreased to 35 mph, and it will likely disperse later today over Mexico.

Sonia had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph as it was heading north-northeast at 18 mph.

The government of Sinaloa state said school classes have been canceled on Nov. 4. in five municipalities that were likely to be affected by the storm.

Sixty shelters were also opened in case anyone had to leave their homes due to the storm

Local officials had yet to decide if any anyone needed to be evacuated at press time.

The U.S. hurricane center confirmed that the storm was likely to produce up to 6 inches of rainfall in Sinaloa and Durango states. Isolated areas could get as much as 10 inches, according to the center.
