Ford’s Police Interceptor Tops Michigan State Tests, Beats Dodge, Chevy

Tests conducted by the Michigan State Police proved that Ford has the quickest police car.

The brand new turbocharged Ford Taurus modified as a Police Interceptor sedan was faster than the Dodge Charger and Chevrolet Caprice V-8, according to Ford.

Ford's police vehicle was also faster than a Chevrolet Tahoe.

"These tests conducted by the Michigan State Police are an important validation of best-in-class performance in outright acceleration - the most critical measure of police pursuit vehicles," said Bill Gubing, Ford chief engineer, in a statement.

Ford's police vehicle, equipped with all-wheel drive and an EcoBoost turbocharged engine, was tested going 0 to 60 mph in 5.66 seconds, according to Ford.

The 5.7-liter Hemi-equipped Dodge Charger was clocked going 6.04 seconds, and the Chevrolet Caprice was timed at 6.01 seconds, respectively.

The tests conducted recently are important due to the "substantial market for police cars" according to USA Today. The Ford Crown Victoria used to be the most commonly used vehicle by police, but the model is now out of production.

"Agencies tell us if the bad guys see the police vehicle quickly close in pursuit, they're less likely to try to run," said Gubing. "If this can help reduce the number of high-speed chases, then we could improve public safety on our nation's roads."
