At least 13 people were killed and 26 others were injured after a five-story residential building collapsed in Mumbai.

Dozens are believed to still be trapped under the wreckage, according to CNN.

"It's a pancake collapse," said Sachidanand Gawde, deputy commandant at the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in a press statement. "The exact number of those trapped under the debris is not known," he said.

Approximately 44 people have been pulled from the debris as of press time, some of which were deceased.

An 11-year-old girl was one of the survivors pulled out after officials heard her shouting that she was still alive.

"There is a lot of chaos here, but my boys are closely monitoring any noises or movement from under the debris that can lead us to people trapped inside," Gawde said. "We are using latest rescue techniques so that maximum number of lives could be saved."

Forty people could still be buried under the wreckage, according to IBN. The building gave way around 6 a.m. in southern Mumbai.

The first floor of the building was rented out to a decorating firm, though 22 apartments on the top four floors were occupied when the building went down, said Sitaram Kunte, the commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Council, which owns the building.

A notice was issued back in April regarding major structural issues with the building. Residents were made aware of the issues, but decided to live there anyway.
