2014 Porsche 918 Spyder Breaks Nurburgring Track Record (VIDEO)

The 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder set a new Nurburgring track record this week, flying around the track in under seven minutes, according to the automaker.

The Spyder will be making its global debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

On Sept. 4, Porsche factory racecar driver Marc Lieb lapped the 12.8-mile track in six minutes and 57 seconds.

Porsche predicted back in May that the Spyder had the "potential to break many records." Turns out they were right.

"By setting a new Nurburgring record, the 918 sports car is demonstrating both the enormous potential that lies in Porsche's pioneering plug-in hybrid concept and the leading role the company enjoys when it comes to developing sporty hybrid vehicles," said Porsche in a press statement.

The previous record, set in 2009, was seven minutes and 11 seconds, set by the Gumpert Apollo Sport, according to Edmunds.

The record is also significant because the 918 Spyder is now the quickest car with global road homologation to lap the Nurburgring track, according to Porsche.
