Mercedes-Benz S Class Plug-In Hybrid Due at Frankfurt Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz is planning on introducing a plug-in hybrid version of its new S-class generation this September during the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The announcement has not been made officially by the German based automaker but multiple media outlets like Autocar.com have been able to confirm the news.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Plug-in Hybrid will be an S500 which will emit just 70 g/km of CO2 according to Autocar. The average fuel economy of the model is expected to be above 90 mpg, in a combined cycle.

Thanks to a V-6 gasoline engine, battery mounted under the trunk floor, and an electric motor, the new model should be able to achieve around 15-20 miles on just electric power. The plug-in is expected to be similar to the Vision S 500 Plug-In Hybrid concept released in 2009.

The Vision is capable of going 0-62 in around 6 seconds, so the new S-Class should be able to reach that time easily.

Once released this fall, the new model will join two other S Class models including the: diesel-electric S 300 BlueTec Hybrid and gasoline-electric S400 Hybrid.

The vehicle's base price and further information will be revealed closer to its release date.

The S-Class should hit showrooms by 2014.

The news comes the same week Mercedes-Benz revealed this week that its 2014 SLS AMG Black Series will cost approximately $276,800 once it is released this summer.
