Chrysler has announced this week it's recalling over 840,000 vehicles, most of which were sold in the U.S. The recall focuses on active-restraint head rests that could have been manufactured with defects according to Chrysler.

In five different recalls, the company said approximately 500,000 cars and SUVs may suffer from the active-restraint head rest issue.

"(A) potentially faulty microcontroller (that) entered the supply chain after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan caused a worldwide microcontroller shortage," Chrysler Group said in a press statement issued this week.

Over 442,000 vehicles sold in the United States are affected by the recall, as well as 25,000 in Canada, 10,000 in Mexico and 12,000 in other locations around the world.

The models involved in the recall include:

-2011 to 2012 Dodge Nitro SUVs

-2011 to 2013 Jeep Liberty SUVs

-2011 to 2013 Chrysler Sebrings, Chrysler 200s and Dodge Avenger midsize vehicles

The Chrysler Group's recall comes just weeks after the company refused the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's attempt to make it recall older Jeep vehicles over a potential fire hazard. The automaker eventually agreed to the recall to avoid a possible public hearing.

This is the 12th different Chrysler recall to take place since June alone according to Consumer Reports. Over 4 million vehicles have been recalled during the time span.
