How Does COVID-19 Impact Truck Drivers?

The COVID-19 pandemic has left nobody unscathed and this includes truck drivers. The dramatic rise of an invisible enemy has forced many businesses to close while countless others are being laid off. Many workers are still considered essential and are being asked to work as this pandemic continues to unfold. The spotlight has been focused on many sectors including the healthcare industry, grocery stores, and pharmacies; however, another part of the economy that is being impacted involves truck drivers. There are a few ways in which truck drivers are going to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every driver's experience is going to be different as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds. Largely, this is going to be dictated by whether or not the driver is employed by a company that is considered essential. For example, if the driver is employed by a company that isn't essential, the business may shut down. This could lead to drivers being laid off, wondering how they are going to put food on the table. In this situation, it is a good idea to take a look at companies that might be seeing a surge in demand. Some companies might actually be seeing more business during this time, particularly companies that deliver food and healthcare supplies.

If a driver signs on with a new company, they might be pressed into service; however, it is critical for drivers to know their rights as well. Simply going to work can be dangerous during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, every truck driver needs to know his or her rights under the law. Those with questions or concerns should remember to reach out to a truck accident lawyer for assistance. While an accident can happen at any time, it is also important for all drivers to be adequately trained before they start to operate a new vehicle.

Furthermore, just because there is an increased demand for drivers does not mean that someone should be pressed to drive an unsafe number of miles or hours just to meet this increased demand. This only increases the chances of someone being involved in a serious auto accident.

Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting everyone. In order for people to make it through this intact, communities need to band together and support one another. This includes those essential workers who risk their lives by going to work during this time of crisis. This includes truck drivers. All truck drivers need to know the rules and regulations surrounding how much, how far, and how long they can drive in a given period of time.
